Kusumi Morikage (久隅守景) was a student of Kano Tan’yu, one of the foremost painters of the early Edo period. Much of Morikage’s work focused on the everyday lives of ordinary people, exemplified in his depictions of village life through the four seasons across series of folding screens. This exhibition, running at Suntory Museum of Art in Roppongi until November 29th, explores Morikage’s life through his work, and that of his children who followed him.
Because of Morikage’s focus on the everyday, his works are very accessible even to those unfamiliar with Japanese art forms. English audio guides are available to help lead you through the exhibition.
