Small and intimate, St Alban’s Nursery is one of the longest established international kindergartens in Tokyo. Focusing on the individuality of each child, its aim is to provide opportunities for learning and self-discovery, giving each child his or her own choice of purposeful, fun-filled activities in a safe, structured, loving environment, based on the Montessori method. Established in 1972 by the women of St Alban’s Anglican-Episcopal church, the school’s program is now independently run, in the hands of long-term resident Gilma Yamamoto-Copeland, but still enjoys its prime location close to Tokyo Tower, in the leafy precincts of the church, which offer a large enclosed outdoor playground, and quiet off-the-street parking and drop-off and pick-up area. Kamiyacho station and Tokyo American Club are just 5 minutes away. ‘Learning, love, laughter’ . . . that’s how one of the St Alban’s parents summed up her child’s experience with the school.
