Mt. Hiuchi (Hiuchiyama) is a 2,462-meter-high mountain located in Joshinetsu Kogen National Park in southern Niigata Prefecture. Its gentle, gradual landform allows a number of bogs and ponds to develop, and the mountain is especially renowned for its diversity of high-altitude plants. The area near the peak is a habitat of Japanese grouse, which is designated as an endangered species. The hike, although not too difficult, takes a full day, and there are a couple of mountain lodges as well as camping grounds on the way. High temperature in midsummer is about 20C, and lows around 15C.
